Wow, this is the first I got to read about this Quantum Theory thing. As a child, I used to watch a lot to cartoons and several movies who's theme is about parallel universe and also had watched Twilight Zone. The writer of those shows I watched must have been inspired by this Quantum Theory.

There is a huge possibility that Quantum Computers can instantly decrypt the RSA. The Multi Universe approach of Quantum Theory says that at sub-atomic level, the behavior does not obeys the Laws of Physics as we know it...photons are supposed to travel in straight lines but they don't..they appear to travel in all direction at the same time which could be explained by saying the universe around each photons tend to split infinitely and the photons enters each one of these universes at the same time. And because of quantum theory, lots of useful devices were invented the most popular of them all is the cd player and vcd/dvd/blue-ray players. The distribution of Accounting Software would not have so convenient with cd's right?

The DES is still widely used today together with the RSA. RSA is used to decrypt the key used to decrypt the data encrypted with DES. Why is this so? If the whole message or data is encrypted with RSA, the decryption process is very slow if the message is let's 100 pages or 1mb of Accounting Software data. That is why DES is used because it is a lot faster to decrypt the message. DES is just as strong as the RSA but it did not solved the key distribution system.

Pls stop mentioning DES. DES(Data Encryption Standard) was invented by some IBM Computer Scientists during the time when most of the world's best Mathematicians, Computer Scientists and Cryptologists are on a tight race in finding the solution to the Key Distribution System. DES is not a breakthrough...it was the RSA that made a huge impact and solved the Key Distribution System making our communication systems highly secured and protecting Accounting Software data reliably. DES is just a variant of the Enigma cypher and still relies on a key that has to be sent to the recipient to decrypt the message.

@Accounting Software Opinion: That is the main motivitation behind all these buzz about Quantum Computers. It is expected that Quantum Computers could easily decrypt the RSA and DES making these 2 reliable encryption systems obsolete. And probably it will. That can only be proven if the Quantum Computer has already been developed.

How powerful really is this Quantum Computer? Can it really be able to decrypt the RSA and DES in just 1 second? A task that can be accomplished by 100 million networked 1GHz PC's in 5 times the age of the Universe? I doubt it very much.

The data entered and processed in Accounting Software and other related activities where data and information should be protected and concealed from the prying eyes of thiefs, scammers, criminals, corrupt regimes will be at risk the moment this Quantum Computer will be developed and be sold in the market just like how current pc's, Accounting Software are being sold. If you have noticed, secured communications has somehow prevented corrupt governments in the far east and africa from killing families and whole villages.

The book that I am reading confirms that Alan Turing was credited to have invented the first programmable machine or the modern computer. But that book was published in the late 90's. So probably you are not updated...Alan Turing's invention was probably recognized in the late 90's.

Is it Allan Turing not the US Military? As far as I can remember, our textbook in college(late 80's) says the ENIAC was the first Digital Computer assembled by the US military after the 2nd World War. I can only remember Allan Turing as the father of Artificial Intelligence.
